  <mechanism-of-toxicity>Cardiotoxin binds to the cell membrane and depolarizes cardiomyocytes. It also shows lytic activities on many other cells, including red blood cells. It also targets the mitochondrial membrane and induces mitochondrial swelling and fragmentation, binds to the integrin alpha-V/beta-3 with a moderate affinity, and inhibits protein kinases C.   <metabolism>Free toxin may be removed by opsonization via the reticuloendothelial system (primarily the liver and kidneys) or it may be degraded through cellular internalization via the lysosomes.
